I’ve got a bit of a story to share with you today from my own experiences when travelling and trying to stay on track with your healthy eating plan.
The thing that I really want to stress to you out of this is how you can enjoy a great weekend away and not worry about stacking on the extra kilos.
Best thing is you are still able to enjoy your cheat meals too. Sounds like a win-win situation? That’s cause it is!
Anyway I want to share with you some of my secrets when we go to one of my wife and mines favourite weekend getaways – the Hunter Valley.
If you’ve ever been up there, you’ll know that the Hunter is known for great wine, food and of course, the Hunter Valley Chocolate Company.
So what’s this all have to do with keeping on track with your healthy eating plan? Because despite all the wine tasting and a regulatory pit stop for some to die for dark chocolate nuts I can manage to keep on track with my healthy eating plan.
And I want to show you how you can too.
But how can you do it when you’re away and there’s so many temptations?
I got smart. I planned for my cheats to be my wine tasting and the chocolates.
We planned dinner at a Japanese restaurant which did awesome seafood that wasn’t cooked in a deep fryer. It comes out fresh and with plenty of nice crispy vegetables. Absolutely delicious and as healthy as you can get.
We do a healthy lunch of a turkey salad. Normally you buy it as a turkey wrap but we just get it on a plate.
All it is made up of is turkey slices, lettuce, some awesome hunter valley cheese and some cranberry sauce. Simple but delicious!
For breakfast I enjoyed a beautiful bacon and eggs but substituted the bread for some spinach. Now you’re probably thinking that the bacon wasn’t exactly the smartest choice but here’s why it was.
Because the restaurant was a top quality place the bacon wasn’t the garbage type that’s all fat and chewy and leaves you feeling cheated for having it. This was delicious and was pure bacon.
Granted, you wouldn’t want to have it by the truckload but considering it’s not an every week occurrence – I think it was a pretty smart choice.
And if you follow the same game plan it will be a smart choice for you too.
For another breakfast the next morning we had it at the hotel and went for the continental breakfast as it was included in our room fee and had fresh fruit and yoghurt and didn’t even give the bread or cereal a glance.
See why breakfast cereals suck here:
I don’t say this to brag about how great my weekend eating was because believe you me, I enjoyed my wine tasting and of course the chocolates.
I just didn’t go overboard like I have done in the past and go for the burger and fries option for lunch, destroy a bunch of fried seafood for dinner and wash it down with a thousand beers.
My point is this just goes to show that even in wine country you don’t have to totally abandon your fat loss mission.
You can keep on track, enjoy your cheat meals yet still feel good about yourself for not throwing everything out the window for a couple of days.
And I didn’t even have to deprive myself of the ‘good’ stuff because when you choose quality you get quality taste without all the garbage included (like in the cheese and bacon examples).
So what can you do this weekend, or on your next trip away to keep you on track with the healthy eating plan?
Trust me, if you plan ahead and think smart about when you actually want to use your cheat meals be surprised about what can actually happen!
