Recently I had to make a road trip up and back to Muswellbrook, which for those who don’t know where that is it is not what you’d call a short drive – 3.5 hour trip each way.
And as I didn’t pack lunch with me I had to rely on the local Muswellbrook Marketplace shopping centre for a quick lunch on the run.
And there were only 3 choices – Subway, Kebab shop and Chinese shop.
So what would you go?
Most people would probably go Subway. I chose the kebab shop.
What! I hear you say!
Yep, Subway is not a smart choice for staying on track with your healthy eating plan. It’s definitely not the worst option but it is not the smartest. The bread is the big killer with the subway.
Bread Is Not As Healthy As You May Think
And the other big thing with most people and Subway is that people will rarely go the 6 inch version and go the footlong.
Even the grannies go this option – well they did according to my observations yesterday.
So why did I go the kebab shop option? I can hear you screaming those things are packed with fat and you don’t know how long they’ve been sitting on that little turner thing for.
Well, you’re 100% right. I didn’t actually eat the kebab.
I got the felafel on a plate with salad. So no bread. Just the felafel and salad.
The felafels this place had weren’t exactly the best tasting ones, or the most healthiest felafels I’ve ever had but they did the job.
It filled a hole in my stomach and I didn’t have to go a greasy kebab, dodgy chinese or Subway bloated bread belly option.
This is just a sample of what you can do.
Other food courts are more encouraging with their healthy options. They have grilled fish and salad, they do freshly made salads with a bit of chicken or tuna in them.
You can even go a bit of sushi every now and then – so long as your sushi option isn’t of the processed variety. Eat the real meat and try and have the rice only if you’re on a training day.
You don’t always have to go the Maccas or KFC at the food court.
Just be smart and don’t be afraid to get them to do something different for you.
Like what they have at a sandwich shop but don’t want the bread? Ask for a plate instead. Most places will be happy to help your request so they can get your business.
Be smart. Eat clean to stay lean. And save your cheat meals for when you can really enjoy them!
